Here is a James Thurlow stereoview depicting the residence of General William J Palmer located in Glen Eyrie. Glen Eyrie is an English Tudor-style castle built in 1871 by General William Jackson Palmer, the founder of Colorado Springs. He also founded the town of Manitou (later Manitou Springs) as a resort town at the base of Pikes Peak. This was likely the carriage house he resided in before he built Glen Eyrie Castle. This house was remodeled in 1881 to include a tower and additional rooms, and made to resemble a stone castle in 1903, reminiscent of those native to England. James Thomas Thurlow (1831-1878) came from Illinois and settled in Manitou, Colorado about 1874. He was known for his photography and is well known today for his stereoviews of Colorado scenery. In 1875 his office was located in the Manitou Union Sunday School building. Little else is known about him. From Thurlow’s Manitou and Vicinity series # 57. The images and mount are both clean and nice.
